The 35th Battery of the Royal Artillery, Karachi, 1899.

Major Jackson is in the middle of the seated row.
The others identified in this photo are, back row from the left: Oldfield and Captain Usborne. Front row, from the left: Barton and Eckersall.

Leopold Charles Louis Oldfield (3.2.1872 to 8/1/1949)  Later knighted. Served in India from 1892 to 1902.  Lieutenant in 1899.

Thomas Usborne (11.12.1866 to 1.2.1952).  In India from 1888 until 1901.  He was a Captain when this photo was taken, became a Major in 1901, retired in 1913 and did not re-enlist.

Patterson Barton (27/6/74 to 6/1/56).  In India 1895 to 1903.  Lieutenant at this time serving under Jackson.  Retired in 1921 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Frederick Eckersall Nixon-Eckersall (born 1869).  Was a Captain in 1899, and left the service in 1910, but was called back in 1914.  He was killed in action on 10th November 1917 and is buried in the Ypres Reservoir Cemetery.  His father was the Rev Canon Eckersall Nixon. He left a widow, Florence, and evidently inverted his surnames for some reason, which made him hard to track down!  He was a Major in 1917.

This photo was taken in Karachi - as you can see from the postings record of H.K.Jackson listed below.

The term battalion is not used in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. The battery is the standard unit, usually made up of four or six guns and these are grouped together in Brigades. In the past every brigade had the same number of batteries so to differentiate between themselves they used the battery number or letter plus the brigade. Just to confuse you the term brigade was changed to a named division then returned to use Battery. They then changed all this (Because it was to confusing) and issued unique numbers to the RA units.
